K&H Pet Cot Product Review

Ezra is my first large breed dog and I’ve had a lot of key learnings along the way. One of the most surprising was in determining the best bed for him. My previous dogs were small breed and slept on small, soft beds from Target or Walmart. I got a similar bed for Ezra in his size, and he kept peeing on it. Needless to say it didn’t work. I tried a couple other options and for a while I was beginning to think he’d be the type of dog to sleep in a hard wire crate without a bed or on the floor next to my bed.

But then one day in training, we learned the “place” command on a dog cot. Completely changed my perspective. I immediately went home to buy Ezra a dog cot of his own, and I think it’s one of his favorite possessions. If you are looking for an elevated dog bed for your furry friend, this is a great post for you. I will details all the reasons why I think Ezra’s dog bed is the best dog bed for large dogs.

Why should you listen to me?

I bought four other dog beds before this one. Not a single one of them really worked. But the beds I was buying were all a little similar to each other. None of them were raised. They all had various amounts of cushion and fabric. The first bed I bought was the same bed our breeder has and I assumed Ezra would take to that one easily, but he didn’t. He peed on it all the time. I threw that one away and tried a couple others. One for his crate that he didn’t like either. Another similar one that was softer for either inside or outside the crate. I eventually gave up and just assumed he was a unique snowflake who preferred sleeping on the hard floor.

But then one day we were in dog training and we were learning the “place” command with a cot the trainer provided. Though Ezra to this day isn’t particularly great with “place,” he hopped right up on the cot and didn’t want to get off. That’s when I realized I wasn’t thinking about the qualities of a dog bed that works for my specific dog. I should have been looking for a bed that is great for large dogs who like to stay cool and need joint support, but I wasn’t.

I brought my first pet cot – the K&H Pet Cot. Nearly a year later, I still have it. I’ve brought it on our vacations to Cape Cod, Acadia National Park, Virginia Beach, and Shenandoah National Park. Ezra sleeps on it every single night and will continue sleeping on it through many more adventures.

Key Qualities for a Large Dog

Elevated with a mesh base

All dogs like being high up. They like feeling as if they are bigger than what they are. An elevated dog bed is a good way for even a small dog to feel more secure, especially if other big dogs are present. For all dogs, it’s also a great training tool to teach the “place” command. The bonus in a raised dog bed for any large breed is that it helps their joints.

For those of you who have ever slept on a cot, you may know from experience that you need extra blankets to stay warm. This bed in particular is extra breathable because of its mesh cover.

Fifth arm for support

This dog bed had a claim to hold a far larger dog than Ezra’s expected dog weight, which is up to 120 lbs. I am in general pretty wary of these claims. Where’s the evidence to back it up? But when I was researching different cots, I had a much higher confidence in this one actually holding Ezra’s weight because of the five leg support. It has a fifth leg/arm in the middle of the bed that helps distribute the weight. There are very few cots on the market with this feature.

Lightweight and easy to assemble or dissemble

It doesn’t require any tools to assemble. I regularly travel with it, bringing it to Dennis Port in Cape Cod and Acadia National Park. It dissembles and fits into tight corners. The one negative of this dog bed is it doesn’t come with a travelling case, but we have gotten by just fine without it! Just stick the joints into your bag and the metal arms and legs can slide into any open are of your car, length wise or width wise.

Since it’s only seven pounds, I regularly carry it from my bedroom downstairs to our family room or kitchen for Ezra to lay on during the day if he wants to. It’s so easy, and I don’t even break a sweat. Previous dogs I’ve owned had multiple beds distributed through the house. It took up space and was annoying to vacuum around. Because this is so easy to carry, I only need one dog bed for Ezra.

It’s also really easy to dissemble and clean. The cover is completely removable. The fabric and mesh cover is 100% machine washable and water resistant. Because the material is so thin, it dries out quite quickly too.

K&H Pet Cot Pricing

I bought this product on Chewy. There are quite a few color options on Chewy to choose from. This is also available at Tractor Supply. Pricing is about the same, though as of writing it is a couple dollars cheaper at Tractor Supply. Tractor Supply has two different color options to choose from. Both will deliver directly to your door.

K&H Pet Cot Competitors

There are quite a few options on Amazon that you can consider for a normal pet cot without the fifth arm support. But looking at fifth arm options, there are very few. My favorite to consider is a pet cot from Suddus and it’s available on Amazon. It’s ~$5 more expensive, but it actually has six arms for extra support and can hold up to 140 lbs. compared to K&H’s 120 lbs. That can be a big difference for some large breeds. These are essentially the only differences between the two beds. Since Ezra was expecting to be a maximum of 105 lbs, I opted for the cheaper dog bed.

Who is K&H Pet Cot right for?

Because of the nature of raised dog beds allowing for air to flow beneath the dog and because mesh is breathable, this bed helps the dog stay cool. This makes it a good bed for dogs that tend to overheat. It’s also a good bed for dogs on medication that causes them to overheat, like steroids.

It’s also a great option for dogs with arthritis, joint issues, or get too hot in summer or too cold in winter laying on the floor in your home. If you like to camp or travel, this is also a great bed for your dog. It’s easy to take apart or put together and light weight to carry.

Who should avoid K&H Pet Cot?

I would avoid this K&H Pet Cot if you have a dog that can’t get onto the bed by himself. I would also avoid raised dog beds in general if you have a dog that prefers to be warm. Cots are cooler to sleep on and the mesh bases makes it even more so because it’s a breathable fabric. Lastly, it’s possible that a very young puppy wouldn’t be interested in a dog bed but would become interested as he matures. Most puppies may want to sleep in warm beds that are smaller and cozier, but that may change as your dog grows up or becomes a senior. This bed might become a solid option for him over time.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a sturdy dog bed for your large breed dog, look no further. The K&H Pet Cot is an excellent option that is easy to put together, has rubber feet to prevent slipping, easy to clean, and has extra support to hold heavy dogs.
