5 Big Dog Leaders We Follow
I started this blog because I fell in love with Ezra and Bernese Mountain Dogs. I wanted to document what I learned along the way as a place to refer back to in the future if I get another large breed puppy. But along the way, I also have learned a ton from other dog blogs. I would be doing myself and my readers a disservice if I didn’t document these blogs and why they are useful to read.
In this post, I will list the top five blogs I read regularly. By the end of this article, you will have resources to provide insights on all dog mom topics to help you and your dog lead healthy lifestyles. This includes costs of dog ownership, training, hiking, eating well, and even cleaning!
Leader #1: BigDogMom.com
Like the name suggests, her blog is focused on dog owners of large and giant breed dogs. She owns two mastiffs and she features them in all her posts. I love her post on starting nose work with her mastiffs. I just began researching how to do scent work with your dog at home and found her site. It’s so relatable – she talks about why she started nose work and how she began training with her dogs. I love how she includes videos throughout to guide you through the process.
She also has a wealth of knowledge in some tough subjects like nail trimming and diet and has a ton of great product recommendations. She has a course specifically for making nail trimming fun for dogs – check it out!

Pawleaks is a fountain of knowledge on all things dogs – from picking a puppy from a reputable breeder to overcoming behavioral issues to health tips. I love her post on the cost to raise a large or giant breed dog. I was just wondering today how much I’ve spent on Ezra as I am approaching our first Gotcha Day in November. I think I’ll do the calculations myself and compare to her post with her Rotty.
She also has an eBook to learn about dog ownership for first time dog owners available for download. Her Etsy shop includes printables for dog owners and greeting cards too.

Based in the Pacific Northwest, this blog focuses on hiking and traveling with Dachsunds. The author, Jessica, owns dachsunds and is a bit of an expert on the breed. If you own a dachsund, she has a lot of rich information on the breed, including basic health and training, and more specific breed concerns like back problems.
But you don’t have to be a dachsund or small dog owner to enjoy her blog. I get a lot of insights from her, particularly on hiking. I love this post on beginner hiker mistakes. I think she does a great job unearthing how to hike responsibly to protect our environment and our dogs. She also has a section of her blog devoted to product reviews and recommendations.

Written by a vet tech with ten years experience, this blog focuses on large dogs and large dog mom lifestyle, featuring two brown newfies. If you own newfies she has a lot of great articles on newfoundland health and grooming.
But she also has a lot of great articles on big dog or general dog care. I found some great new tips in her article on simple ways to remove pet hair from the carpet that can apply to any owner of a dog that sheds a lot. It never once occurred to me to use baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming. I’m going to try that before Ezra blows his coat again.

Sugar is a Golden Retriever that has gone over the rainbow bridge, but was such a great dog that it inspired the blog, pet bandanas, and two eBooks for sale on Amazon! One is a dog recipe book and the other is an illustrated children’s book.
This blog primarily focuses on information on Golden Retrievers, so if you own a golden this will be a good resource for you. It also talks about dog travel and homemade dog recipes. Though I don’t own a golden, her post on whether or not to get a second dog I thought was very helpful for all dog owners.
