Mayflower Beach Tides: #1 Dog Activity in the Off-Season

I took Ezra to Dennis Port, MA in Cape Cod in April over Easter. We stayed at a dog friendly airbnb with a private beach. It was his first time at the beach. It was the first time for both of us to go to Dennis Port and see the Mayflower Beach tides. Being a mountain dog, I was surprised he loved the beach so much!

While Cape Cod and our private beach was awesome, the absolute best part of the trip for both me and Ezra was experiencing the Mayflower Beach tides.

Can I bring my dog to any beach in Cape Cod at any time?

But before we go too much farther, let’s talk about the off-season in Cape Cod. Mayflower Beach is dog friendly ONLY in the off-season (after Labor Day through start of Memorial Day Weekend). I think the best time to go to Cape Cod is in the off-season – it’s cheaper to go, there are fewer people, and the weather is cooler for our furry friends.

There are a few beaches that are dog friendly year-round in Cape Cod. It is best to look up the specific beach to see all the rules, including parking, beach bonfires, and dog friendliness, before visiting the beach. Cape Beach Dog also does a good job documenting dog friendly beaches too! Check them out here.

What are the Mayflower Beach Tides?

When the tides are low at Mayflower Beach, the sea retreats about a mile back. This creates tide pools and uneven yet soft sand to walk through. If you have any kids, this is a good time to search for hermit crabs or clams.

Puppies love walking on the cool sand and splashing through the water too!

When is the best time to see the Mayflower Beach Tides?

First, you should review the Mayflower Beach tides chart to identify when the low tide is.

If you are going in the off-season, odds are that you will not have a lot of crowds. As a result, parking should be easy whenever you go. So don’t let the fear of a too crowded beach impact your decision!

It will be colder in the evenings, but my recommendation is to go for sunset if you can! It’s quite beautiful. It is also more pleasant for dogs that are susceptible to overheating, like Bernese Mountain Dogs, to stay out of the direct sun.

What else is there to do in Dennis Port, MA with your dog?

West Dennis Beach welcomes dogs during the off-season, on or off leash. It’s not nearly as picturesque as Mayflower Beach, but it’s a nice beach to play beach games with your pup.

Dennis also has a rail trail to walk your dog on. Be careful – it can be hilly and it is long! Do research before walking to ensure it makes sense for your specific pup.

Which restaurants in Dennis, MA are dog friendly?

There are tons of options in Dennis that are dog friendly! You can find a lot of options here.

I recommend eating on the patio at Scargo Cafe with your pup. Scargo Cafe is a top notch restaurant. Every item on the menu is delicious, and you can find something for everyone there.

It is pricey so it may not make sense for everyone. However, if you have the budget for one expensive meal, you should definitely eat here!

Another great and casual option is Buckies Biscotti! They serve breakfast and lunch options. They also have a fantastic bakery with coffee, like biscotti or cookies. Best of all, they sell biscuits for your dog too!

Looking for other New England dog friendly trips? Check out Maine! You can hike or enjoy scenic views at Acadia National Park or in Stonington on Deer Isle.
